AI or Artificial Intelligence is having more than its fair share of “15 minutes of fame” moment (often attributed to Andy Warhol). Although the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning has been a decades-long effort, the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT service has fired things up in a massive way. Midjourney is an artificial intelligence art generation service that launched in mid-2022 and you have probably seen the images floating around the internet.

In my post on Advanced Prompts, ChatGPT Success Completely Depends On Your Prompt, it definitely generated some conversation on social media for me. All positive, but I know some folks are not too pleased about AI in education, at work (resumes), and a host of areas. Many more artists are quite outraged, and rightfully so in some cases, with Midjourney.
With that said, these two posts from Forbes contributor Rob Salkowitz can get you up to speed on some of the corporate developments and an interview with Midjourney founder and CEO David Holz.
Midjourney uses Discord as its delivery / creating mechanism – that means you need to have or create a Discord account to even try the service. Quickly, Discord is a place to talk and hang out. It got its start for gamers wanting to talk (voice or text-based chat) while in the midst of a game. It caught on and many other groups use the platform to connect with others.
When you go to the Midjourney home page, you will see a button “Join the Beta” and that takes you to a new screen “Continue to Discord” which launches the app where you can register for the service. Once you do that, it lets you into the web-based Discord or you can download the desktop app (recommended) and now you are in the community and able to start creating art and images.
The Midjourney service is free for a set number of images (I believe it is still 25, but those go quick) and then it is $10 for 200 (those go quick too) and $30 per month for unlimited and well worth the funds if you plan to do any serious creating.
It can be more than a bit disorienting in Discord, so here’s the key thing to know: On the left side navigation column (seen in screenshot below) are rooms called “#newbies-179” or newbies with another number.

After typing /imagine, again press tab or space, which opens the “prompt” area and smaller black window where you can start typing your creative idea.
In the coming weeks, I am going to share additional prompt advice posts on Midjourney I have received or figured out through a lot of trial and error. It is a lot of fun to create images and art if you feel that you have never been a creative person capable of drawing, sketching, painting your way to success. Midjourney makes it possible in a wide range of ways.
For now, just type in /imagine and whatever strikes your fancy and you will get back some creative version of what you asked for. The Discord discussion moves fast so your image may be far up in the chat area, so keep scrolling until you find it.
